West Texas Ranches Opened for Festival

BALMORHEA, TEXAS-- In November of this year, birders will have the rare opportunity of touring private ranches and the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve during the First Annual Balmorhea Birdfest which will take place in Balmorhea. Thousands of acres normally closed to the public will be available for this premier event, which will be held from October 31 through November 3.

Birding sites will also include Imperial Dam and Lake Balmorhea. Montezuma Quail and Mountain Chickadee will be two of the most sought after species among more than one hundred expected during the festival. The Birdfest will be kicked off with a costume party on Halloween evening. Participants are asked to come dressed as a bird and the best costume will be rewarded with a personally inscribed copy of Kay Charter’s book For the Love of Birds. Charter is a Birdfest Committee Member.

Well-known nature photographer Russ Hansen and Texas bird expert Kelly Bryan will be featured speakers. Carry along breakfasts and western style evening barbeques are included in the cost, which is $100.00 per participant. Registration is limited to 100 participants.
