Third Annual Balmorhea Birdfest

BALMORHEA, TEXAS-- The Third Annual Balmorhea Birdfest will be held this year on Nov. 4 - 7, 2004. We will bird grasslands, montane areas & wetlands on private ranches and Davis Mountains Preserve searching for Montezuma and Scaled Quail, Mountain Chickadee, Burrowing Owl, winter sparrows and much more. Tour Descriptions:


Friday: Buffalo Trail Boy Scout Ranch and Weinacht Ranch: Weinacht family homestead and ranch, owned an operated for more than a century; possibilities include Brewer’s Sparrow, Verdin, Crissal Thrasher and Burrowing Owl. On road to Boy Scout Ranch, we may see Sage and Crissal Thrasher, Black-throated and Black-chinned Sparrow and possible Montezuma Quail. All day.

Saturday: KC Ranch: Large working cattle ranch. Habitat ranges from desert grass/shrub-scrub to riparian on elevations ranging from 4000' - 6500'. Possibilities include Phainopepla, Cactus Wren, Scaled Quail, Sage Thrasher. Montezuma Quail may also be possible. All day.

Limited Mobility: This tour provides birding largely from vehicles on above venues; some walking over easy terrain. There is no additional charge for this service, but please note number of persons who wish to take part as space is limited:

Sunday, Nov. 7 at 8:00 AM: Cowboy breakfast at Circle Bar (prepared for us by local cowboys): For those that wish to remain later in the day, immediately following breakfast there will be birding on Weinacht Ranch and Lake Balmorhea.

Thursday Davis Mountains Preserve extension: The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve is a pristine oak-juniper woodlands which host such specialties as Mt. Chickadee, Williamson’s Sapsucker, Acorn Woodpecker. The fee for this all-day tour is an additional $75.00 per person and includes all meals for that day.

Check-in: Thursday, November 3 between 2 :00 PM - 4:00 PM: Sign in at Circle Bar Steakhouse, adjacent to I-10 Fina station at Exit 212. All meals and evening programs, including Thursday night dinner and get-together, held at this restaurant. For Davis Mountains extension, check in on Wednesday, November 2 between 2 and 4 PM.
