May-July Program Schedule for Habitat Discovery Center

Saturday, May 8, 2PM: What Does the Future Hold for Kirtland’s Warbler?
Discover how this songbird, once believed to be headed for extinction, experienced a population increase during the 1990's. Retired MDNR biologist Jerry Weinrich, who coordinated the warbler recovery program, will present a slide program about what led to the bird’s decline, the effort to bring it back and its current population status. Guided trail walks on Charter Sanctuary will follow Weinrich’s program and refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, May 19, 1:00 PM: Romance is in the Air
Bobbie Poor will teach us some of the common and unusual love stories in the world of birds. Trail hike of Charter Sanctuary included.

Saturday, May 22, 8:30AM: Bird Hike
Join Kay Charter for an hour and a half bird hike through Charter Sanctuary.

Saturday, May 29, 8:30AM: Bird Hike
Join Kay Charter for an hour and a half bird hike through Charter Sanctuary.

Saturday, June 5, 9:00AM: A Bird in the Bush Habitat Class
Kay Charter will lead a two hour program about how to bring more birds into your yard. Program includes a trail hike on Charter Sanctuary.

Saturday, June 5, 2:00PM: Habitat Habit
Native plant consultant Janet Dickerson will present slides of native plants and explain the value of these jewels of forest and field.

Saturday, June 12, 8:30AM: Bird Hike
Kay Charter will lead an hour and a half bird hike through Charter Sanctuary.

Saturday, June 12, 2 - 4 PM: Open House
Come along for our open house and learn more about birds and bird conservation. Bird hikes. Native plant consultant. Entymologist Duke Elsner will lead a butterfly hike through Charter Sanctuary. Refreshments.

Wednesday, June 16, 9:30AM: What’s in a Name?
Join Bobbie Poor to learn about family characteristics of some of our Michigan birds.

Wednesday, June 23, 9:30 AM: Strange Encounters of the Bird Kind
A collection of avian trivia; which bird collects the most frequent flyer miles, which is the honorary mammal and other fun facts about birds.

Thursday, June 24, Noon - 8:30PM; 4th Annual Parade of Ponds
Saving Birds Thru Habitat is pleased to be a part of this annual event, which benefits local Habitat for Humanity. Tickets are $6.00. For tickets or more information, call HFH at 941-4663 or Waterscapes, Inc. at 275-3625.

Confused about which birding field guide is best for you? This class with Kay Charter will help figure out not only how to sort them out, but how to use them.

Saturday, July 10, 2:00 PM: Birds of Prey
Wings of Wonder Executive Director Rebecca Lessard will bring some of her "teaching birds" to the Discovery Center. These are owls and hawks which sustained injuries that prohibited rehabilitation back into the wild; they are now stars of Rebecca’s delightful program.

Saturday, July 17, 8:30AM: Bird Hike
Join Kay Charter for an hour and a half bird hike through Charter Sanctuary.

Saturday, July 17, 10:00 AM: Alien Invasion
Join native plant consultant Janet Dickerson to learn how to recognize alien plants and discover why they are harmful to our environment.



Directions to the Discovery Center: Travel north on M-22 about a mile and a half past the Casino. Turn left on Putnam. Saving Birds Thru Habitat is located at 5020 N. Putnam, two miles from M-22, on the right side.
